Anyone else miss the good ol’ days of the 1990’s? A 90’s child myself, I grew up listening to Britney and watching Rugrats on a Saturday morning with my sister which when I think about it, always brings a smile to face. Here’s a little bit of nostalgia for you with my throwback list of my favourite things about that ‘groovalicious’ (yep, not acceptable in this day and age) decade:
This is where the 90’s reeeally came alive. Britney, NSYNC, Destiny’s Child, Shania Twain, Hanson and the Spice Girls are just a few of the artists I used to sing along to whilst dancing in my room using my hairbrush as a makeshift microphone. The music back then had a poppish happy-go-lucky vibe to it which made every radio station and CD (yes, CD’s!) was filled to the brim with cheesey, amazing tunes.
2. The ‘Lingo’
Words such as ‘groovy’ and phrases such as ‘let’s get jiggy with it’ are no longer part of the everyday language of teens everywhere. Personally, I much prefer the slang of back in the day- partly because it was cleaner but mostly because it was just fun to say!
3. The Fashion
Although I loved the fashion back then- I used to stare in awe at the posters who were rocking the latest fashions such as chokers, pigtails and plaid mini skirts- I almost love the re-vamped 90’s style that has been around currently (I know, I know, unfaithful to my decade!). I love ringer tees, mom jeans and all things cropped, and I don’t think my 90’s fashion streak will ever fade.
4. The Kids TV Shows
Rugrats, Scooby Doo and The Tweenies are just a few of my favourite TV shows as a kid. The humour and simplicity doesn’t seem the same nowadays- one of the reasons I get giddy with childhood nostalgia if ever I see something anything to do with 90’s kids shows.
The 90’s was a decade where some of my favourite Disney films, even now, came to life. Beauty and the Beast in 1991, Aladdin in 1992, The Lion King in 1994, Mulan in 1998 and my personal favourite Tarzan in 1999- I will forever be thankful to Disney and the 90’s for giving me such fond childhood memories.
6. Matching Outfits
Something my parents loved to do much to my sister’s dismay is put us both in matching outfits. I thought this was super cool when I was young and felt like we were an iconic duo or something, however looking back (although we do look adorable) I can see why Steph wasn’t a fan. Until this day parents still love to do this, however here is a picture of my sister and I in a rather fetching bright orange number…

7. The Sitcoms
Everyone knows and loves ‘Friends’- for me the vast amount of episodes and the laidback humour has been a Godsend through my awful anxiety days. Other sitcoms such as ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ and ‘Sex and the City’ are still firm favourites I turn to on a rainy day and ‘Father Ted’, ‘The Vicar of Dibley’ and ‘The Simpsons’ are all long-running shows that I grew up with and still love.
I know, I’ve rambled on about 90’s media stuff a LOT but the films really do deserve a little space too! Titanic is one of my faves, always has been, and it has the added benefit of Leo’s gorgeousness. Another couple of firm favourites for me personally are Clueless, 1o Things I Hate About You and Four Weddings and a Funeral- films I will turn to again and again for years to come.
9. Games and Hobbies
It’s childhood reminiscence time again! Paper games such as MASH and origami ‘fortune tellers’ were created, filling classrooms full of bored schoolchildren in the 90’s. Other childhood favourites include Polly Pocket and of course Barbie- and no, my dad can never throw them away! Other things 90’s kids loved (as I’m sure many of you will agree with) is riding on scooters, eating 99 Mr Whippy’s and playing on our beloved gameboys (in my family, stealing Steph’s purple gameboy advanced) that look like bricks nowadays.
And there is my personal round up of the 90’s-I’m now feeling very nostalgic of those sunny childhood days!
Feel free to comment your favourite things about the 90’s,
Have a lovely day!
